John 1:1–14
Gospel of John · Chapter 1
The Word
Became Flesh
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through Him all things were made. 4In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 1:5
What does John mean by darkness?
John uses a specific Greek word — skotia — that carries more than absence of light. It's active resistance.

He doesn't say darkness was destroyed. He says it couldn't overcome the light. Couldn't grasp it, and couldn't catch it.

Where in your life does that distinction matter right now?
